Taj Hotels Expands in Africa with New Property in Cairo, Egypt

Taj Hotels Expands in Africa

IHCL, the parent company of the Taj brand, has made a move into Egypt by coming into an agreement to establish a new hotel in Cairo, thus marking the company’s first property in the North African country. This arrangement not only enlarges Taj’s footprint in Africa but also grants Taj hotels in Johannesburg and Cape Town the right to be part of the same continent.

Named Taj Cairo, the new hotel will occupy the geographical center of the city, Opera Square. The current hotel building that will become Taj Cairo is the iconic Continental Hotel. The property, which dates back to the 1870s and has been a part of Cairo’s picturesque landscape for quite some time, overlooks the Azbakeya Gardens.

According to the deal between the IHCL and the Egyptian General Company for Tourism & Hotels (EGOTH), the Continental Hotel will undergo a revamping process along with an overhaul and will become a luxury five-star hotel. Not only will the project uphold the building’s ancient look, but it will also turn it into a modern lodging area composed of around 300 rooms, alongside fine dining, wellness, and event spaces being provided.

The redeveloping of the property is interpreted as more than just a business enlargement; it is considered to be a partnership between Indian and Egyptian hospitality industries to jointly open tourism and preserve heritage. The CEO of EGOTH characterized the venture as an important step in the process of restoring the city’s historic architecture as well as enhancing its global attractivity.

Taj Cairo will be amongst the hotels of Taj worldwide that are administered under the umbrella of its main brand. With an extensive portfolio of over 335 hotels across 150 destinations globally, Taj is positioned for international expansion as it enters high-potential markets like Egypt.

Moreover, Taj’s loyalty program is reaching out to a larger audience. The Taj InnerCircle program is partnering with other international hotel networks to provide members with unified benefits thus making the value of stays higher across continents.

Cairo is one of Africa’s oldest and most visited cities. The establishment of a luxury Taj hotel in the city is expected to contribute to the development of tourism, bring in more international visitors, and create job opportunities in the hospitality and related sectors. This is part of Egypt’s larger plan to improve the tourism infrastructure and restore the historic sites for the purpose of generating economic growth.

Taj’s entry into Egypt is not only a reinforcement of its vision to become a global hospitality leader but also an active participation in cultural preservation. For tourists, it will be a combination of heritage, luxury, and modern amenities in one of the world’s most historic capitals.
