Richard G. Odjrado: Creating a Technology Ecosystem Built by Africa, for Africa

Many of the most meaningful businesses begin with a personal experience that grows into a larger purpose. Sometimes, a single challenge becomes the starting point for an idea that goes on to create lasting impact for thousands of people. That journey reflects the belief that real innovation begins by solving real problems. Richard G. Odjrado, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of AS World Tech, has built his entrepreneurial journey around that belief. Guided by his philosophy that “Impossible is nothing,” Richard has transformed AS World Tech into a growing African technology brand driven by disciplined execution, practical innovation, and a long-term commitment to strengthening the continent’s technological future.
As a prominent Beninese technology entrepreneur and innovator, he is working to reshape Africa’s digital landscape by making high-quality technology more accessible while building an ecosystem that includes local manufacturing, repair services, technical training, financing, and recycling. He has spent the past several years challenging that reality.
A Stolen Phone That Sparked a Bigger Purpose
Richard’s entrepreneurial journey began unexpectedly in 2019 after his phone was stolen during a night out in Cotonou. While most people would have accepted the loss and moved on, the incident led him to question a much larger problem. Millions of Africans were purchasing technology without access to dependable protection, affordable repair services, or sustainable replacement options. Devices often became electronic waste long before the end of their usable life. That single experience stayed with him. Over the next two years, the idea evolved into a clear vision, leading to the launch of AS World Tech in June 2021.
His ambition reached far beyond selling electronics. He envisioned an African technology ecosystem capable of designing, assembling, maintaining, financing, and recycling devices locally. The objective was to prove that African businesses could develop world-class technology solutions while addressing the unique realities of local markets.
Turning Ambitious Ideas into Measurable Progress
Richard often reflects that every major achievement began with someone insisting it could not be done. Instead of accepting limitations, he treated every challenge as an opportunity to prove what disciplined execution could accomplish.
The company’s first milestone came with the introduction of the AS Watch anti-theft smartwatch in 2021. A year later, AS World Tech expanded by opening its first showroom in Cotonou while launching the “Bénin Connecté” initiative, making technology more accessible to students, artisans, and workers through flexible financing.
One of the company’s defining achievements followed soon after when it secured a major public framework agreement involving more than 3,000 computers and accessories for 63 institutions across the Beninese State. Successfully delivering nearly all of the project demonstrated that a locally built technology company could meet demanding public-sector expectations.
Today, AS World Tech has sold more than 6,600 devices, serves over 3,000 customers across nine countries, and operates an assembly facility capable of producing up to 1,000 devices daily. The company’s intellectual property is protected in 17 African countries, while patent filings continue to strengthen its innovation portfolio.
Richard also takes pride in another accomplishment that extends beyond business performance. Having personally trained more than 4,000 individuals, he sees talent development as one of the company’s greatest contributions to Africa’s digital future. Combined with dozens of industry recognitions and remarkable revenue growth over four years, these milestones represent progress built through consistent delivery rather than ambitious promises.
Treating “Impossible” as an Invitation to Begin
Richard’s personal philosophy, “Impossible is nothing,” has become more than a motivational phrase. It serves as the operating principle behind every major decision he makes. He believes that impossible is simply an opinion formed before the work begins. Whether announcing plans to assemble computers in Benin, secure government technology contracts, or prepare for regional capital markets, skepticism has always followed. Yet each challenge strengthened his conviction that success comes from persistence rather than certainty.
Failures have also played an important role in shaping his perspective. Missing internal targets has never discouraged him. Instead, every setback has become an opportunity to learn, improve, and move forward.
Within AS World Tech, this philosophy shapes leadership in a practical way. Rather than asking employees to believe in ambitious goals, Richard encourages them to test ideas, measure results, improve continuously, and allow confidence to grow through tangible achievements.
Solving Africa’s Technology Challenges Through an Integrated Model
Richard believes Africa’s digital progress depends on solving three interconnected challenges.
- The first is affordability. Many people still struggle to access quality technology because devices remain beyond their financial reach.
- The second challenge is durability. Limited after-sales service often forces consumers to replace products that could have been repaired, contributing to rapidly increasing electronic waste across the continent.
- The third challenge is the shortage of skilled technical professionals capable of supporting growing digital infrastructure.
Instead of treating these issues separately, AS World Tech has built an interconnected ecosystem where each business supports the others. Asuka Spirit focuses on local manufacturing to make technology significantly more affordable. Dr Asuka provides maintenance and repair services across multiple brands. The upcoming Asuka Academy is preparing future technicians through practical training, while Asuka Green Tech extends product life through refurbishment and responsible recycling. AsukAssurance protects customer investments by offering additional security and peace of mind.
Richard believes this circular approach strengthens technological independence while creating long-term economic value across African markets.
Balancing Bold Innovation with Business Discipline
Innovation often begins with imagination, but Richard believes sustainable growth requires equal attention to discipline. He encourages every employee to experiment with new ideas while maintaining clear accountability for measurable outcomes. At AS World Tech, creativity is welcomed, but every concept must ultimately demonstrate value through data.
The executive leadership team monitors key operational indicators ranging from cash flow and customer satisfaction to factory utilization and future employment outcomes for academy graduates. These measurements ensure that innovation remains connected to business performance.
Several of the company’s successful products originated from simple observations of everyday customer challenges. The anti-theft smartwatch emerged from Richard’s own personal experience. Subscription-based maintenance services and the Sérénité offering evolved from practical customer needs rather than theoretical market analysis.
In his view, successful innovation comes from giving creative ideas enough structure to become sustainable businesses.
Leadership Built on Honesty, Trust, and Consistency
Richard believes resilient organizations are built on leadership that refuses to avoid difficult realities. Honesty begins with acknowledging challenges instead of presenting an idealized version of the business. Transparency strengthens relationships with shareholders because both successes and weaknesses are communicated with equal clarity. He also places enormous value on loyalty. Many members of his leadership team have remained alongside him since the company’s earliest days, creating stability during periods of rapid growth and inevitable uncertainty.
Above everything else, Richard believes execution defines leadership. Vision alone has little value unless it results in commitments that are fulfilled consistently, whether serving government institutions or individual students seeking affordable technology.
Finding Strength in the Company’s Most Difficult Year
One of the most defining moments in Richard’s entrepreneurial journey arrived during the financial review of 2024. As the company prepared certified financial statements, a comprehensive accounting review revealed losses exceeding 300 million CFA francs. The discovery forced a difficult decision. The company could attempt to soften the narrative or confront the reality directly.
Richard chose complete transparency. Every financial record was reviewed, corrected, and documented with full accuracy. Although the process made 2024 the most difficult year of his business career, it also became the turning point that strengthened the company’s foundations.
Just one year later, AS World Tech recorded its strongest financial performance, achieving significant revenue growth, returning to profitability, and producing certified financial results that reflected genuine recovery. That experience reshaped Richard’s understanding of resilience. To him, resilience is not avoiding failure. It is having the discipline to transform mistakes into stronger foundations for future success.
Listening to Customers as the Company’s Greatest Source of Innovation
Richard believes the best business ideas rarely begin inside boardrooms. They emerge from conversations with customers. The inspiration behind several of AS World Tech’s most successful initiatives came directly from everyday experiences. The AS Watch was born from a theft. Dr Asuka emerged because customers repeatedly asked where they could repair their devices. Nation Connectée was developed after recognizing that many talented people lacked financing rather than ambition. This continuous dialogue has become a formal part of the company’s decision-making process. Every repair request, training session, trade-in, and customer interaction contributes valuable insight that shapes future products and services.
Rather than relying solely on market reports, Richard prefers observing what happens inside company branches and listening to the people using the technology every day. He believes that understanding Africa’s technology future begins by understanding the daily realities of the communities it serves.
Preparing Africa for the Next Wave of Digital Transformation
Richard believes the next decade will be defined by technologies that solve practical challenges rather than simply introducing new digital tools. In his view, artificial intelligence will transform equipment maintenance by predicting failures before they occur, making technology more reliable and extending the lifespan of devices. This shift alone could significantly reduce costs for businesses and institutions across Africa.
He also sees the Internet of Things becoming a major driver of progress by connecting schools, hospitals, farms, and public infrastructure in ways that improve efficiency and decision-making. Digital installment financing is another area he considers essential, particularly for expanding technology access. AS World Tech is already preparing AS Pay in collaboration with banking partners to make digital devices more affordable for individuals and businesses.
Another area he believes will grow rapidly is the circular economy. Rather than viewing electronic waste as a problem, Richard sees it as a valuable source of materials, employment, and new business opportunities. Yet despite the rapid pace of technological change, he believes human capability will remain the most valuable asset. That conviction explains why AS World Tech invests heavily in developing technical skills alongside its products and services.
Building Talent Instead of Searching for It
Finding skilled professionals remains one of the biggest challenges facing technology companies, but Richard has chosen a different approach. Rather than competing for limited talent, AS World Tech is committed to creating it.
The upcoming Asuka Academy represents one of the company’s most ambitious long-term investments. By 2030, the academy aims to train around 10,000 people, with a strong focus on creating opportunities for young professionals and women. Many of these graduates will continue into the company’s assembly facilities, repair centers, workshops, and franchise network.
The company also draws engineering expertise from respected institutions such as EPITECH and other local and international centers of excellence, while technical specialists are recruited from vocational schools across the country.
Retention, however, goes beyond financial incentives. Profit-sharing rewards employees for collective success, but Richard believes purpose creates even stronger commitment. Seeing government ministries, schools, and businesses using devices assembled by their own hands gives employees a sense of pride that extends far beyond a paycheck. It creates ownership in building an African technology brand capable of competing on the global stage.
Encouraging Entrepreneurs to Think Beyond Boundaries
Richard’s advice to aspiring entrepreneurs begins with authenticity. He believes the strongest businesses are born from problems founders have experienced themselves or witnessed closely within their communities. Real challenges often produce the most meaningful innovations. He also cautions against becoming consumed by storytelling. While compelling narratives may attract attention, lasting businesses are built on measurable performance. Investors ultimately place their confidence in evidence, disciplined execution, and financial transparency.
Maintaining accurate records, building strong governance, and preparing for scrutiny from the earliest stages are habits he encourages every entrepreneur to develop. In his view, these practices create businesses that are ready for larger opportunities when they arrive.
Perhaps his strongest message concerns ambition. Richard believes African entrepreneurs should never lower their standards because of geography. Their products, certifications, and brands should compete confidently alongside the world’s leading technology companies. Excellence, he believes, is never something that requires permission.
Expanding AS World Tech into a Pan-African Technology Ecosystem
The next phase of AS World Tech’s journey is guided by three strategic priorities that reflect both growth and long-term sustainability. The first is institutional transformation. Richard is preparing the company for conversion into a public limited company while strengthening corporate governance with the long-term objective of listing on the Regional Stock Exchange (BRVM) by the end of 2027.
The second priority focuses on expanding recurring service-based revenue. Beyond manufacturing devices, the company intends to strengthen its offerings in software services, maintenance, insurance, leasing, and technical training. By 2030, these services are expected to represent a significant share of the group’s overall revenue while supporting ambitious business growth.
Geographic expansion forms the third pillar of the company’s strategy. Beginning in Cotonou, AS World Tech plans to establish operations across ten African countries through a hub-and-spoke model that combines centralized manufacturing with regional training centers and neighborhood service workshops.
Richard envisions customers experiencing the same level of reliability wherever they interact with the brand. Affordable devices, dependable repair services, insurance protection, responsible recycling, and new innovations such as connected sneakers all form part of that broader customer experience.
Creating a Legacy That Extends Beyond Business
While financial growth remains important, Richard measures success through a much larger vision. He hopes future generations of African children will grow up using technology designed, assembled, repaired, and eventually engineered within their own countries. His dream is to create an environment where young people no longer believe they must leave Africa to build successful careers in technology.
The legacy he hopes to leave includes thousands of skilled jobs, a generation equipped with valuable technical expertise, and a thriving circular economy that transforms electronic waste into opportunity instead of pollution.
Above all, Richard wants AS World Tech to stand as proof that a company born from a personal setback can contribute to the technological independence of an entire continent. His story demonstrates that even the simplest moment can become the starting point for lasting transformation when combined with vision, determination, and disciplined execution.
Leadership is Defined by the Strength to Keep Moving
As Richard reflects on his journey, one belief continues to guide him above all others. Success is rarely reserved for those with the greatest resources or the easiest path. It belongs to those who remain consistent through uncertainty, setbacks, and change. He accepts that failure is part of every meaningful journey. What truly matters is how leaders respond when difficulties arise, whether they remain honest, continue serving others, and stay committed to the work that first inspired them.
Looking back, he remembers beginning with very little beyond conviction and determination. Now, he hopes his story encourages others to see periods of struggle differently. They are not signs to stop. They are often the preparation required before greater opportunities arrive. His enduring philosophy continues to capture that belief in its simplest form: Impossible is nothing. Everything is possible.
