Patrick Vieira Named New Senegal Head Coach After World Cup Exit

Patrick Vieira has been named Senegal’s new head coach, taking charge after Pape Thiaw left the role following the team’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Born in Dakar, Vieira returns to the country where he spent his early childhood and begins his first job in international management.

The Patrick Vieira Senegal head coach appointment comes after a difficult World Cup finish. Senegal led Belgium 2-0 late in their last-32 match but eventually lost 3-2 after extra time, ending the campaign earlier than expected.

Vieira arrives with extensive experience from club football. His previous coaching roles included New York City FC, Nice, Crystal Palace, Strasbourg and Genoa. As a player, he won the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 with France and earned more than 100 international caps.

The Senegal national team also enters a new phase after a period of strong results. The side won the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco, although the status of that title remains subject to a legal dispute after the final was later overturned and Senegal appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Vieira said the expectations around the team have grown because Senegal now belongs among Africa’s leading football nations. He wants to preserve the squad’s identity and unity rather than rebuild the team from the beginning.

The Patrick Vieira Senegal head coach appointment gives the former Arsenal captain an immediate rebuilding task. Vieira has called for a team built around structure, intensity and aggression while maintaining the qualities already established within the squad.

His approach will also be tested by the pressure surrounding the Senegal national team.

Vieira’s first major task will be preparing Senegal for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign. His first competitive fixtures are scheduled for the September international window, giving the new coach limited time to establish his methods.

The Senegal football team will therefore begin the next cycle with a new coach, familiar core and renewed expectations. Vieira has made clear that the immediate priority is to build on what already exists while restoring confidence after the World Cup disappointment.
